Active Offer Approach

Active Offer of French Language Services

Active offer means to offer, in a proactive way, and first point of contact with the patient, services in the patient’s official language of choice.  More specifically, it means that we enable the patients to express themselves and to be served in the official language they feel most comfortable.

In healthcare, the active offer not only allows patients to communicate more easily and to be understood, but it also helps healthcare professionals to provide quality services that are safe, ethical and fair, especially for linguistic-minority communities.

Active offer of French language services is an important factor when engaging patients in the local health system.  It provides for a better quality of service that is responsive to client needs and has a positive impact for clients, institutions and communities, as a clear understanding of one’s health. It makes for a healthier individual and environment.

Health service providers who are identified to plan for the provision of French language services and health service providers that are designated under the French Language Services Act to provide services in French are encouraged to be proactive in establishing and offering an active offer of services in French.
